Music! There are different kinds of music for different kinds of ensembles to perform. There is many different types of marching band shows. (I prefer contemporary marching shows, you know, the ones without music from the radio. When i become a band director, contemporary music will be a must for my marching band.) There are also different types of music like, festive or holiday, performance and competition, or even pep tunes. In this blog i will be discussing the multiple types of music. Festive or Holiday music! Festive and holiday music is mainly chosen for times around Christmas, Hanukkah, etc, is a great way to spread holiday cheer!, but there are also music pieces for veterans day, memorial day, 4th of July, etc. Music is a great way to capture emotion and spread that emotion to the audience. Performance and Competition! Many many choices in this category of music! Some of my favorite pieces, like Abram's Pursuit, by: David R. Holsinger, and Ludlow, by: Roland Barrett, and one of my favorite 4th of july pieces that is also considered a competition piece is At Dawn They Slept, by: Jay Bocook. Competition season is a fun part of the band experience and having a good performance piece makes it even more fun. Music is on a grading scale, very easy to very difficult. In my band class we play more grade 4 and 5 and even 6! Music has changed my life for the better and I hope you find it just as amazing! Thank you for reading my blog post on music! Feel free to comment! Drum Corps International! Something I have always wanted to see. Me being the obsessive band freak I am, I find DCI amazing. I wouldn't mind going to see it and watch my fellow trumpet and mellophone players. Marching Instruments are much different from sitting bands like orchestras or concert bands, there are contras or sousaphones that cover tuba parts, and there are mellophones that emulate the sound of a french horn. DCI marching can be much much different from high school bands. Sometimes music can be so fast that a player might be running in step, whilst playing music. Marching technique may stay the same, but may be more difficult. DCI is a very popular thing in the music world. High school marching bands are encouraged to attend a DCI show, that includes multiple different bands, like Jersey Surf, Carolina Crown, etc. Some shows can be absolutely mind blowing and creative that you will want an encore performance every time. As you can see in the picture above, the bands are very very large and have a nice general and visual effect on field. Formation is key when it comes to marching band, especially DCI. If you're interested in learning an instrument, going to a DCI show would be a great example of some professional music. Going to a DCI show is also a great example for future marchers too! Thank you so much for reading this blog post, feel free to comment what you think about DCI!!! Thanks so much again! Orchestras usually consist of string instruments and softer wind instruments including percussion. So the Violin, Viola, Cello, and the Bass are most likely included. Some brass instruments like the French Horn and trumpet may be included and some mellow woodwind instruments like the clarinet or flute may be included also.
Orchestras are very different from concert bands, they provide the audience with a different variety of music, and they tend to be more popular in some areas. They provide the audience with a wide range from the highest key on the piano to the lowest key. Some orchestras even include wind instruments, so its like concert band and orchestra combined, they tend to also be very popular, like the Philharmonic Orchestra. The Philharmonic Orchestra includes many instruments, most stings that i mentioned before are included, and brass and woodwind parts out the wazoo. Audiences can and will come from the farthest places, thousands of people come to see orchestras every year no matter how far. I don't blame them. I was lucky to be able to experience one when I went to Chicago, it was fantastic. If you're interested in learning an instrument, it's never too late. I've been playing my trumpet for almost four years now and I absolutely love it, there is a large variety to chose from so don't worry. When I see orchestras perform, it makes me want to be a band director even more. Thank you for reading my post on orchestras, and I hope you find interests in learning music! Concert band! Concert band is usually consisted of winds and percussion, unlike an orchestra where orchestras may include strings. There any many types of concert band classes provided in schools, mostly varying on difficulty level, like easy or hard. The grading scale for music (0-6). most advanced high school wind ensemble classes read from 4-6.
Assessment! Assessment is an important part of the school year, where many people and music ensembles as a whole will freak out. Your ensemble is graded with either a 5-poor, 4-fair, 3-good, 2-excellent, and 1-superior. Having a superior rating is not easy, it takes work and dedication. You have to want it. Superior ratings are a great way to keep up a good reputation for your ensemble. Music! There are huge options for music pieces to perform. Like concert and contest pieces or festive pieces. There are endless opportunities to chose from. Perks! If you want to be a music major in college like me, then having an advanced wind ensemble class on your resumé for college, and play more difficult music will help your sight reading ability. Auditions! One of the most important parts of being in band, and one of the toughest. There are outside auditions for your school, some of the ones I go to are districts, which pulls the best kids from your school district to perform in an ensemble. Another one is all county, its the same idea but just your schools county. Sometimes the competition is rough but it just takes practice and a lot of it. |
